Edgardo Carmona develops “likable characters that make Cartagena, Colombia, what it is” from multiple parts or structural elements. Since 2003, his artwork has been exhibited in South America, Germany and most recently in an 18-city tour of Europe, including Paris. Many of his works are on permanent display around the world. Edgardo was born in Cartagena, and studied mechanical engineering, business administration, fine arts, painting and sculpture.

This piece takes place in the late evening hours, narrating the story of what takes place after the work day is over and recreates the conflicts of those that have had too much to drink as they sit around park benches and one refuses to take another drink. The gestures of the characters, and the movements of their hands in the air tell a story. In his pieces the artist tells a story of common daily scenes, incorporating irony, humor, and studied emotions.

La escultura se construye en el ámbito de la noche después de la jornada laboral y recrea los conflictos de los borrachos en las bancas de los parques de la ciudad, donde uno de ellos se niega a recibir el siguiente trago de licor. El artista forja con sus obras escenas de la cotidianidad, con ironía, humor y estudio de las emociones y los estados anímicos.

This sculpture captures three elements: setting, position, and mystery. It transports us to a scene where a music lover sits in his rocking chair listening to music. He sits in a position of excitement and curiosity, bringing his ear close to the speaker to ensure he is able to capture every note. It creates a sense of mystery and allure as to what could be so magical in this song.

La posición de encantamiento del que escucha, con su oreja cerca a la bocina de la vitrola, un instante escultórico curiosísimo y logrado. Observación, detallismo y expresión. Domino players are an emblematic part of tradition and life in the Caribbean and Antilles. This piece depicts the simplicity and ease of outdoor Caribbean living. The players sit around a domino game and strategize each move based on their decoding of missing pieces to complete the game.

The hands of the street vendor selling “raspaos” (snow cones), transform giant blocks of ice into miniscule pieces of shaved ice, the condensed milk perfectly drips atop the sweet flavors of lime, tamarind, and Kola. “El vendedor de raspao” (snow cone street vendor) is one of the iconic characters found in the landscape of Cartagena de Indias, and in this sculpture Carmona is able to capture the vendor in his full splendor.

Las manos del vendedor de “raspaos”, convierten un bloque de hielo, en minúsculos copos de nieve, la leche condensada y los sabores de limón, tamarindo, Kola, etc. Es uno de los personajes entrañables del paisaje urbano de Cartagena de indias. One of the most emblematic characters of Cartagena de Indias is the palenquera (female fruit seller) of San Basilio de Palenque. This piece depicts the majestic figure of the palenquera, with her grand fruit basket sitting above her head, as if she carried with her the weight of the world.
